Positioning your sofa so it sits in direct sunlight may cause the colour of the fabric to fade, so it is best to avoid this if you can. Try to avoid placing a sofa right up against a radiator too – not only can this damage the material, but it will prevent the heat spreading efficiently throughout the room.

Loose cushions need plumping – especially those filled with feathers. Give them a vigorous beating and a shake every day, if you can. Rotate the pillows regularly to ensure that they wear evenly.

Many retailers offer a fabric (or leather) protection service provided by external companies at an additional fee. This generally involves your furniture being pre-treated before delivery, and support and cover should you suffer any particularly vicious stains. If you would like to purchase fabric protection, it is worth checking that the product applied is not harmful in any way.

Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to regularly remove dust from sofa surfaces and dust and fluff from underneath cushions.
